Several of our team members have hands-on experience in broadcast television. Why does this matter? Because live television is drastically different than a traditional live event or conference but it is VERY SIMILAR to an online event. We\u2019d like to share a story plus five tips to set you up for success in the virtual and hybrid landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, coming from broadcast to AV is unique. Most audiovisual companies don\u2019t have this experience and the nuances are apparent when you look at where many online events are coming up short. To illustrate, let me explain this through a personal story about my transition from live television to live events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For AV, less was more …<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In television, we typically had a ton of cameras and cut every 5-8 seconds. It was fast-paced but not chaotic. Not knowing any better, I directed my first large, in-person medical conference the same way. Everyone loved the energy during the Opening General Session but that quickly changed when we transitioned to Plenary Sessions. Our client asked that we simply show a full-page title graphic then one camera \u2026 that was all \u2026 anything else was simply a distraction. It felt like an incredible waste of the crew\u2019s time and talent but I grew to understand and appreciate the different styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For TV, more is more \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Lots of companies produce based on their AV experience and that approach isn\u2019t entirely wrong \u2026 just different. But you need to understand that it\u2019s not an apples-to-apples comparison. The right approach really depends on the experience you want to create for participants. For example, if you have a high-energy corporate event, an emotional and inspiring fundraiser, or an entertainment-based gala \u2026 you want your audience to have an engaging \u201cwow\u201d experience versus passive one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To start thinking of online events (virtual or hybrid) more like a live broadcast, there are five things we recommend you consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The bottom line is this \u2026 consider the engagement between a typical video conference versus a television broadcast and ask yourself, \u201cwhich is right for my audience?\u201d.
